The Mat

why we made this

If you asked us to choose a yoga essential we couldn't live without, The Mat would be it. Made of moisture-absorbing natural rubber to soak up sweat, it helps us get a grip during Hot, Hatha or Yin. Ideal for novice yogis, die-hard yogis and everything in between, we like to call it the little black dress of yoga gear.

fabric + features

  • thin polyurethane top layer wicks away sweat and absorbs moisture to help you get a grip
  • thick base layer cushions your hands and feet
  • antimicrobial additive helps prevent mold, bacteria and fungi from taking over your mat
  • natural rubber has a slight smell, but don't worry, it fades over time (tip: unroll it and air it out before you head to class)
  • wipe your mat down with warm, soapy water or soak it after a super sweaty class
  • imported

Doesn't slip on the reverse I don't slip when I use this mat 'upside down'. Although there really is no 'correct side' up, so I am told. It's worth trying it if slippage is occurring. So it doesn't matter which way I have it because I was gifted this Mat in black. I'd be tempted with a prettier colour but really black is better since I am putting it against the yoga studio floor. I find when The Mat is smooth side down it still holds it place on the ground and my hands do not slide in a pose. The other benefit seems like the slicker side down picks up way less stuff when rolling it up after class. When I had the smoother side up, I would slide in a downward dog. I'm not a light person (185 lb) and I figured that my weight was contributing to the problem... but then I decided to try putting the smoother side down to face the floor. My problem disappeared with the rough side facing me, and the smooth side down. I reallyu would recommend that others give that a try if they are having a slipping problem. I now wish is that the bottom half can come in different colours. I see the Hot Towel (plush petal black ghost/almost pear) has that green on the 'rough' side. I'd give it one more star if I can have a black smooth side and a colourful 'rough' side since I have colour envy. I might get The Mat 3mm version if this colourful 'rough' side were to appear because it is heavy and I am not keen on the weight; however I know there's more material. I had a Stotts Pilates Mat and while it appeared thick, it was mostly air because it became so thin upon applied weight. October 22, 2014
Love the mat, hate the discoloration To start, I really really love this mat. It's by far the best mat I've ever practiced on. You will not slip around at all, regardless of how sweaty you get. However, I have my mat in a light blue colour, and I'm disappointed with the fact that it has become severely discolored. I don't know if its' due to sweat, oils from hands or feet or a combination? I know tons of other people with this mat (in various colors) and no one else seems to have this discoloration issue. I've tried scrubbing and cleaning it with different products and nothing works. Very disappointing, given the mat itself is phenomenal. October 22, 2014
LOVE LOVE LOVE i LOVE LOVE LOVE this mat! buy it in black---you will have no problems with the color or stains. i have been using it for almost a year and i have extremely sweaty hands and feet and have always struggled with my mat performance in the past. this mat is a lifesaver and has endured many hot yogas and still works and looks great! i can not recommend it enough. great job on this one, lulu! nosedivin' in downward dog I'm fairly new to yoga as I am more into crossfit and have always shopped at lulu. I purchased this mat back in August and have used it for every yoga class I've been to that includes hot yoga, power yoga, and occasionally gentle yoga which amounts to 20+ classes. I've read past reviews before and was hoping they weren't true. Up until that past few classes I was in love with my mat, however recently I noticed that my hands slip while in downward dog. I'm disappointed in my fairly new mat, and last thing I want is to do a nosedive while flowing through a vinyasa into downward dog. October 21, 2014
Very disappointed! I bought this mat and was very excited to use it. I took it to a hot yoga class and once getting home I decided to disinfect it, since I did a lot of sweating during my class. I was shocked when part of the colour and grip of the mat wore off after wiping it down. I will not be buying again. For such an expensive mat I would expect better quality. October 17, 2014
Becomes discolored quickly! I bought The Mat in a light blue color in early 2013. Almost immediately, it became yellowed and dingy looking after being rolled up. It hasn't affected the quality of my practice, but it's become more noticeable over time and now I'm a bit embarrassed to bring it to class! I have tried cleaning it with vinegar+water several times; that definitely got rid of the "rubber" smell many people complain about, but did nothing for the yellow-ing effect! October 15, 2014
The Mat This mat is definitely the highest quality mat you can purchase (in my opinion). And, if you leave it out and unrolled for a few days before using it, the smell will go away somewhat. I love this mat but I can't give it 5 stars because it has one major design flaw. The major flaw is that it's too large to fit into a standard yoga mat bag. I have 2 mat bags (one of which is very dear to me and I absolutely can't stand that this mat won't fit into it) and it doesn't fit into either. The most frustrating part about that is the sales person at the store did not explain that at all to me. If she had, I likely would have spent my gift card on other things. While I have been wanting this mat for a long time, I love my yoga bag and it's just really annoying that I have to choose between the two. If anything, Lulu employees should know to tell customers that the mats do not fit into standard bags. Now I have this very expensive (though admittedly great) mat that I have to carry without a bag OR leave at home and take an old mat so I can use a bag. Lulu should consider making mats that actually fit in something other than their strap carrier things. October 15, 2014
(Om)G, DROP EVERYTHING AND BUY THIS MAT Cushion, Grip and everything in-between to non-slip. Everyone needs this mat! Yoga, stretching, cross-fit, core conditioning and perfect place to read your textbook on. Why are you still reading this, head out and buy this mat! October 12, 2014
Vast improvement in my yoga practice I was hesitant to purchase this mat as it is a bit pricey along with the mixed reviews I read about this mat. However, I am happy to say this mat has changed my yoga practice for the better! Before, I would hesitate to go into poses like down dog due to slipping, and avoid inversions for fear of falling in front of everyone! A few things I love aboug this mat: 1) It is the perfect thickness. Perfect cushion for headstands! 2) It is sticky enough to feel confident in your down dog, but still allows you to transition smoothly between poses. I even purchased a towel for my old mat (that was about $60) to prevent slipping, and I do not need anything over this mat. Save yourself some money for "accessiories" for your mat and just buy this mat! 3) I purchased the purple color, and is a perfect color where it won't have sweat stains, but still adds a little color to your practice! After I clean my mat, I leave it unrolled to air out and I have not noticed any sweat stains! 4) If you leave the mat rolled out after you purchase it, the rubbery smell goes away (but I didn't really mind the smell to begin with, weird I know) 5) Lastly, some people complained about the heaviness of the mat, but honestly that is something I would not even think to complain about. I do not notice a "heaviness" to this mat. However, I would use the mat even if it were 10 pounds, now that would be a great arm workout ;) Overall, I am very happy I purchased this mat. Worth the money in my opinion! October 10, 2014
THE MATT So I purchased this mat after buying cheaper mats that I would slip on. I love this mat but recently the underside has become so gummy and sticky that I literally have to peel it off the floor after my hot power yoga practice. It leaves part of the mat, the black underside on the floor. I can't even roll the mat anymore because it's stickiness gets on my practice side of the mat. I am very disappointed and ready to throw it in the trash - this was not an inexpensive purchase for me!!!! Uggggh. Is this a common defect? October 7, 2014
