Wears out quickly
I actually really loved this mat when I first bought it, but it only took about 4 months to start wearing down.
I noticed that it became a bit more slippery and that even the simplest of poses would stretch it. And now the grippy side is starting to separate from the cushion side at the corners.
I'm wondering if maybe I bought a faulty mat? As an expensive mat, I'd hope it could last longer... I do love how big it is compared to other mats out there, so I don't really want to give up on it.

Disappointing after all
When I first bought The Mat I was in love. The thickness and grip was 100 times better than the many cheaper mats I had previously tried. However, after about a couple of months The Mat already seems to have stretched out and lost some of its durability. The color is also starting to become blotchy and fading in some areas. Obviously wear and tear is expected, but when I only practice about once a week I would expect it to last a little longer than it has.

Giving up and moving on
I've had the mat, which I received as a Christmas present, for a few years now. I was really excited as I was looking for an upgrade from my run-of-the-mill Gaiam mat. I tried really hard to like the Lululemon mat, but this is the end of the road. At first the smell kept me from using it. Now the smell is gone, but there's not enough grip. I've tried using the smooth side and the rougher backside, but no luck. Also the mat is just too hard. I might as well practice right on the wood floor. I'm giving it away and moving on to another mfr. It's too bad.

The Mat was my very first lululemon purchase, and I was so excited to finally have a decent, durable mat. I was surprised and satisfied with the size of the mat; it is slightly bigger than the average yoga mat. It also provides a great cushion and for this reason, it is especially great for handstands and crow variations, etc.
However, I am really having trouble enjoying The Mat because of the rubber smell. In lululemon's defense, the packaging does warn of this smell and provides some solutions, such as washing, hanging the mat to dry, etc. But, I have found no relief whatsoever. In fact, it seems to be getting more intense. I really needed a mat that I could use for hours at a time. Now, I have trouble using the mat at all. Every time I touch it, despite having washed it repeatedly, my hands and body reek of the rubber smell. When I leave my mat in my car (which usually is not for long), my car smells like a tire. It is unbearable. The material is less than ideal.
The Mat is also reversible. But, it is kind of tricky. If you use the black side that has more cushion, and you aren't careful that there isn't anything underneath your mat on the other side, it will puncture the other side. So, I feel restricted to one side of the mat.
For these reasons, I have trouble recommending this mat to my friends. It does not seem to be worth the price or the frustration of washing, drying, and lugging the thing around.

Great while it lasted...
If I would have created a review for "The Mat" when I first purchased it in January I would have raved about the fantastic grip, lifesaving cushion and a myriad of other benefits but I am sad to report that these features lasted for (at the most) 3 months. I practice usually 6 times a week so my mat is getting a lot of use. It started to stretch out whenever I would be in postures like warrior 2 and crescent lunge. By "stretch out" I mean my foot would literally stretch the mat and I would end up slipping or falling out of the pose all together. It lost its great grip. I slip and slide all over my mat even my instructor noticed I was getting frustrated. I know that the educators stress not to use anything expect for water to clean your mat and I followed this rule and the mat is still horrible to practice on. I think that it is absolutely ridiculous to pay 68 dollars for a mat that only really serves its purpose for 3 months? If you practice once or twice a week then maybe you can make it last longer. Basically if you plan on spending 68 dollars for a mat you might consider spending a little more and getting one that will actually last you.

Waste of Money!
First I'll comment on the smell- I know in the product description it says there is a "slight" smell (haha- nothing slight about it) but it also says that the smell will eventually go away- I've had my mat for 3 weeks and it still stinks just as bad as it did when I first bought it! I'm embarrassed to take it to class with me because I know others can smell it as well!!! During the 3 weeks I haven't rolled my mat up once, I've been trying to let it air out as much as possible so I'm wondering how long it will take for the smell to fade.
Second, every mark shows on this mat, I had my forehead on the mat for all of 3 seconds and boom- left a mark, I breathed on the mat while in child's pose and again- left a mark. I tried washing the mat with warm soapy water as per lulu's instructions but the marks are still there!
Third- this mat slips! I used it on hardwood floors, the floors were clean and dry- the mat was moving all over the place. That being said the top part of the mat is non-slip which is nice.
Some positive things- it is a larger mat, longer and wider than most other mats I've had. It also absorbs sweat nicely (but leaves marks all over the place).
I wouldn't recommend this mat to anybody, for $68 I don't think it's worth it. I'd use my $30 Gaiam yoga mat over this one any day.

In love with this mat!
I recently purchased this mat because I was slipping and sliding on my Nike mat and I'm so glad that I did! In four (sweaty) practices, I have not slipped once. I feel totally comfortable to tackle more difficult poses without the fear of falling. I have a bad left knee and this has the perfect amount of cushion to keep me comfortable. I have already had a ton of compliments. I highly recommend this mat!

LOVE this mat!
I absolutely love this mat. I've used it in Hot Yoga, Vinyasa, Restorative, and Hatha. Not once has it slipped on me. I'm never concerned about my feet or hands slipping in any of my classes and it stays completely put wherever I lay it down. It does have the 'new mat' smell but it really doesn't bother me (I've had it for about a month) and it's lessening day by day. This mat is a keeper for me and when it shreds, I'll be getting another one.

What the heck?
I've only had this mat for about two weeks and it already looks like I've put it through a meat grinder. Every single ding and mark you put on this mat is going to stay there forever. I hung mine over the top of an open door for the first few days to help with the natural rubber smell and you can still clearly see the imprint from the top of the door. Not to mention the dog casually walking over it and leaving a clear trail. I hope you like your mat to look used because this thing looks like I've beaten it to heck and back.
Ultra-absorbent? Indeed. I try to clean this thing with tea tree oil and yep, it absorbed the spray. I have lovely little splatter marks all over the mat. Been waiting for them to go away for the last three days. Nope, still there. I can also see the outline of my breath when we in child's pose last week. Still hasn't gone away. I don't sweat much and bought this mat for the non-slip surface, and yet it still looks like I left it out in the rain.
Actual performance is not great. I tried to use it on my natural tile floor and it was slipping all over the place. The floor was bone dry, and yes I am sure. Tried a few different times and still slipping around. The black rubber on the bottom seems to not work, but the colored top layer works almost too well. I have had to adapt the way I do yoga just for this specific mat. No more sliding a little lower if you can't take the strain - you have to hop or do that awkward see-saw motion. Not a huge compliant, given that this is specifically what the mat is supposed to do. So the bottom layer doesn't work and the top layer does.
The smell is terrible. It makes me gag. I leave it airing out EVERY night and have done so for 2 weeks and still no change. The smell is very very strong. I tried to spray it down with tea tree oil and hope it would absorb that smell instead but no such luck. Protip: don't breathe through your mouth while your face is near this mat. It's almost toxic fume level bad at times. I've had the people next to me during group classes move away because they couldn't stand the smell.
The length is longer than the standard mats I'd used in the past. I greatly, greatly enjoy the extra leg room. It's also a bit wider which is fantastic for a larger person. It takes a few days to acclimate to the larger size but I LOVE IT! I keep thinking I'm going to step off the side onto the floor and nope, The Mat is still there! It's like it goes on forever.
Not sure if I just got a bad Mat or what. I'd like to return it for a full refund but the thing looks so trashed that I doubt they'd take it, even though I have my receipt. I wouldn't recommend it for the person who only does yoga every so often. But I would recommend it for a dedicated yoga practitioner who's looking for a heavy-duty, non-slip mat. This thing WILL wick away ALL the moisture you put on it and you will NOT slip. The trade-off is that it looks like you mauled it.

I purchased my mat late November 2013. I had spoken to people in my classes and to the people at the store. I thought I had done enough research to invest in The Mat. Fast forward to July and my mat is up for retirement. It's slick and has no grip. I'm really overall disappointed in the life quality of the mat after people highly recommended the mat. I will be purchasing a Manduka next.
